Representation Analysis

 Representation Analysis

    Tide:

The first advertisement about Tide lacked much representation, and in my opinion was slightly offensive. For starters the ad lacks representation of any race but white. The mom is perceived as an upper/middle class white women. She dresses in a classy way and gives off the vibe that only people of that social standard can use Tide. Also the way she talks about her daughter is kind of inappropriate. She makes it seem as if dressing as a tomboy is wrong. There were better ways to go about this ad, and convey the message they are trying to convey. I assume their target audience is moms who have to deal with troubled stains from their children however the way the accomplished that was on the boundary of offensive towards tomboys.

    Axe:

My jaw dropped while watching this ad. It is so unbelievably disgusting in the way it objectifies women. The only positive aspect about this ad was the different representation of women of all colors and races. Besides that they show women in a sexual and objectifying way with angles showing off their breasts inappropriately for an ad. They also show women chasing towards a man making men seem in control over them as if women are weak and powerless. I assume their target audience is men around the age of 12 and up who yearn to be noticed by women, if thats who they are attracted too, but they do this in a way that very wrongly portrays women. They could have conveyed the same message in a way that doesn't objectify and belittle women while completing the same goal.

Genre Research

 What is Drama?

Google defines drama as an exciting, emotional, or unexpected series of events or set of circumstances. Drama connects us between reality and how we wish to perceive reality.
The content included within a drama film takes basic things that happens in our daily lives and embellishes it to make it seem more interesting. The way we wish to live our lives tends to be the way drama films contain their content. They appeal to the masses as a way we yearn our life to be. We get intrigued by this way of life that seems so similar to us yet for many is nearly impossible to happen exactly.
The filmmakers use certain techniques during production that allow these films to seem relatable. For example, when filming an action or horror film you may use certain lighting or shot composition that effects the emotions we feel during the film. When filming a drama film it wouldn't make sense to use those techniques. It would make the most sense to use point of view shots, natural lighting, basic music that fits the vibe, and techniques that make it seem like a normal day.
Marketing techniques used to sell these drama films tend to be via social media. Most of their views tend to be people in younger ages who have social media. By posting on platforms like tik tok and Instagram their can get their films across and in a money sufficient way.
A more recent film that is drama based is called After. The film is based on a book about a girl who goes to college to live her life in what she assumes will be an unproblematic and fun experience that turns out to be full of pain, lust, and love. This film has many qualities that are realistic and appeal to the masses of their goal audience. The film takes place in a university in the states, with a girl not out of the ordinary who as a boyfriend and goes in with the mindset of having fun while getting a good education. Looking at this from a basic stand point that is what most 18 year old's go through and feel, thus creating the relatable aspect. To keep the reader intrigued it has a unique part about it which would be a love for a British bad boy which tends to be most teenage girls fantasy at one point in their life and to see it pan out, even in a fictional sense, catches views eyes are keeps them wanting to watch.
Another drama film that doesn't have as much of a romantic aspect is wonder. The film is about a boy who has was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare facial deformity that's required dozens of surgeries during his first decade of life. Though this film does not have as much of a relatable aspect is does include normal things that most witness in our daily life like school and bullying. It conveys a real life disease that people have and allows us to learn while teaching us life lessons about inclusion and bullying. This film creates a feel good and happy ending feeling that most drama films have.

Introduction Blog

My name is Alexa and I live the fabulous life of a 16 year old stuck in her room all day. I wake up, brush my teeth, go to class, and then go to sleep. What an interesting and hectic life I live.

On a real note, my life is actually more complicated than that. I am growing during this era has its insane ups and downs. Politically we are a hot mess, mentally we are even worse, and educational wise everything is how can have a higher test score and not how much you are actually learning and understand. Putting my biased beliefs aside, I think growing up in this era is genuinely very hard. The world has been flipped completely and utterly upside down.

If you take covid out of the picture, which is a problem within itself, life has grown to be pretty complicated. Obviously progressively we in are in a better state because as a women of a minority in another era I wouldn't have the rights I have now. However, something that scares me so much is how much love has evolved. I mean this in a romantic and in a friendship way. The way humans interact has no compassion and and minimal feeling. Everything happens through a phone. Back in February, I would walk the halls observing people as couple sat directly next to each other and instead of showing romantic emotions via in person they were texting each other, or friends or were scrolling through social media. Same with friends, they would be walking right net to each other and wouldn't say a single word, and not in a funny sense.

I fear that as love is evolving through texts and emojis I won't necessarily find that love I yearn for. I don't want to meet my soulmate through tinder or snapchat. I don't want my significant other to show their emotion towards me through heart emojis. You can call me old fashion, but this isn't looking like a very good road ahead.

Something I have noticed with my generation is that we don't date. Dating is weird and gross to most people. They would rather meet up on a Saturday, hookup and then dip. That astounds me because I always grew up watching Disney movies and I see the guy and the girl go on these romantic dates and live the life I yearn. Obviously I know the world isn't like the movies, however a girl can wish. I just wish that life wasn't so lacking emotion via in person and enjoying a persons company wasn't such a far fetched and foreign thought.
